For touring, the Savage gets about the same miles per tank and a Sporty so that's not too bad. Until you get your big tank, it's easy to carry extra fuel in a couple of 1 quart metal bottles designed to hold fuel for camp stoves. Throw them in the bottom of your saddlebags and use them as your "reserve". They give you about 15-20 miles of extra range and if you stash them where you can get to them easily you can even refuel without stopping if you're careful.
